February we celebrate - and make - Black History!

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of Black Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to Black Americans living in the United States today. Black history is American history. The study of our history tells us not only what happened in the past, but gives us the tools to analyze why it happened.  Americans need to know the entire story of who we have been — the good, the bad and the complex. That is how we make a better union together.

We celebrate that most Americans are strong and welcome the challenge to see the whole truth. Instead of retreating to the ideals of an imaginary past, we welcome the challenges of learning about our diverse experiences as well as the opportunity to appreciate cultures, ideas, and traditions that are not our own.  We also know that celebrating requires presence.

To celebrate, well, you have to intentionally connect by spending meaningful time with one another seeing each other.

So, in celebration of this month - “Black History Month”, W.I.T.H.  invites you to truly see and experience Black culture, and recommends some ways for you to do just that.
